IMPACT OF THE WORK ENVIRONMENT ON EMPLOYEE PERFORMANCE IN THE FEDERAL FIRE SERVICE, ABUJA, NIGERIA

An ideal work environment should act as a key driver of employee performance by improving productivity, job satisfaction, and the overall quality of work. In many advanced economies, organizations have effectively utilized conducive work environments to achieve high operational standards, boost employee commitment, and enhance organizational resilience. This study investigated how the work environment influences employee performance within the Federal Fire Service in Abuja, Nigeria. A descriptive research design was employed, and data were collected using a structured questionnaire distributed to employees. The population of interest was 2,149 personnel, from which a stratified sampling technique was used to ensure proper representation. Within each stratum, simple random sampling was applied. A sample size of 337 respondents was determined, including a 20% margin of safety. Data were analysed through descriptive statistics and regression analysis, with a 5% level of significance used to test the hypotheses aligned with the study’s objectives. The results showed that the physical work environment significantly affects employee productivity in the Federal Fire Service, Abuja. Based on these findings, the study concluded that improvements in the physical workspace have a direct and meaningful impact on employee output. Accordingly, it is recommended that the management of the Federal Fire Service and similar organizations consistently evaluate and upgrade their physical work conditions. This includes regular facility improvements, maintenance of safety and operational tools, provision of ergonomic office furniture, and better environmental cleanliness and workplace design.
